We would like to congratulate Chaplain James Matthew Hall on his recent Army Gold Level Commendation by the Chief of Army.

The role of Chaplain in many cases is undertaken outside the limelight, however, James conspicuous service above the call of duty has been acknowledged.

The Commendation reads….

I commend you for the superior devotion to duty as an Australian Army chaplain while posted to seventh brigade units from 2020 to 2023.

The pastoral care you provided to the 2nd Combat Engineer regiment, and the 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, has positively impacted the welfare of our people, significantly contributed to the comeback, effectiveness of Army’s teams, and the delivery of capability outcomes.

Your exceptional devotion to duty during multiple sensitive and catastrophic events directly supported the welfare of our people, the families of fallen members, and enhanced reputation of the Australian Army. Your chaplaincy support, transcended other brigades and units and was instrumental in providing compassion, bereavement, counselling and healing to hundreds of grief-stricken soldiers and distraught families, impacted by several separate tragedies.

Your achievements are in keeping with the final traditions of the Australian army and the Australian Defence Force.

Simon Stewart AO, DSC
Lieutenant General
Chief of Army.
30 November 2023.
