Each year, Australian Army Chaplains seek to honour one of their own with a recognition award known as a 414 Award. This recognition is usually announced on the Army Chaplain Department Birthday.
This year John Raike an Army Reserve Chaplain and minister at Collingwood in Melbourne was recognised for the contribution he has made to the Royal Australian Army Chaplains Department by exemplary pastoral leadership in support of 4 Brigade and Operation COVID Assist, building in his “locked down” team a culture of humility, resilience and strength of character.
Like many of the Army Chaplains, John regularly goes above and beyond when Army calls, and does so balancing the challenges of civilian commitments and the extraordinary personal circumstances and restrictions that many Victorians have unfortunately become experts in managing. He is respected by his peers, and amidst a strong field of nominations was a unanimous choice of the Army Chaplaincy leadership team.
Due to COVID restrictions, it was difficult to find a suitable presentation opportunity.
Jewish Chaplain Gutnick and Rabbi Genende (Religious Advisory Committee to the Services representative) made the presentation at the Defence Force Jewish Community’s Chanukah celebration in Melbourne on 05 December.
